Pretty young Penny There was a beautiful young Irish lass with the most wild beautiful red hair. She was loved by all in her little village, and would talk and laugh with everyone as she made her way through the little town. Not everything was good though. Taking care of those wild red locks of hair was quite an arduous task, and things kept getting caught in he hair as she ran through the woods and peat bogs. Finally she had enough. She went to the town barber and demanded he cut it all off clean. He did as she asked and left her with a head as clean as when she was a new born babe. Satisfied, she paid and left. As she walked the road, no one would talk to her. Strangely, people might glance, but not make eye contact. They would not make much more than a grunt, and quickly shuffle away. This concerned Penny greatly, and dealt a severe blow to her spirit. Almost in tears, she ran home as quickly as she could. Trying to fight back the sobs, she told her gram what laid so heavy on her heart.... Kindly, her gram said in a gentile voice "Silly silly girl, don't you know? A Penny shaved, is a Penny spurned!"
